Time to renew the rivalry? Texas AD wants to see Longhorns play Texas A&M: ‘We need to play each other’
Time and time again members on each side of the Texas A&M-Texas rivalry continue to support the renewal of the annual series that ceased following the end of the 2011 season. Despite the over 100 years of history between the two storied college football programs, the bad blood between the two has yet to be overlooked and a new deal to meet on the field remains out of reach.
While the two have yet to agree to terms on when they could meet again, you can add Texas AD Chris Del Conte to the growing list of people that want to see the rivalry renewed on the field. Tom Herman and Kellen Mond each have recently expressed their interest in seeing the game returned.
During a recent appearance at the Texas Tribune Festival, Del Conte offered up his thoughts on renewing the rivalry — with Texas A&M AD Ross Bjork sitting on stage alongside the Texas AD.
“Us not playing A&M is not good for college football,” Del Conte said, according to Jack Flagler of Community Impact Central Austin. “We need to play each other.”
Unfortunately, as has been the case with all the members of the rivalry that come out and support the game returning, Del Conte also noted he doesn’t have the power to bring it back himself.
The logistics of this aren’t easy, as both Bjork and Del Conte note. Both teams are scheduled out for years, and Del Conte says that much of this falls to those above the ADs pay grade—although @GregAbbott_TX is all for it!
