Tommy Rees, former Alabama OC, to reportedly land on NFL staff

Tommy Rees is reportedly heading to the NFL after his season at Alabama.
According to Zac Jackson of The Athletic, the Cleveland Browns are working to add Rees to their staff. Rees’ exact title is not set as the hire is not official, but he will reportedly coach tight ends and be involved in the passing scheme.

Rees, 31, was Alabama offensive coordinator last season.

Rees joined the Alabama staff in February 2023 as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. After Nick Saban’s retirement, new Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer did not retain Rees. DeBoer opted to bring Washington OC Ryan Grubb to Tuscaloosa.
Under Rees, Alabama finished fourth in SEC in scoring offense with 34 points per game. On the ESPN FPI’s efficiency rankings, Alabama was No. 19 nationally, good for fifth in the SEC.
Rees was reported to be a potential candidate for the Alabama head coaching job following Saban’s retirement. In November, he was mentioned for the Indiana head coaching job.
Rees, who turns 32 in May, has been in coaching since 2015. After getting his start as a graduate assistant at Northwestern in 2015, Rees’ second coaching gig came in the NFL. He was an offensive assistant with the San Diego Chargers for the 2016 season.
After his season with the Chargers, Rees joined the staff at Notre Dame, his alma mater. Rees, an Irish quarterback from 2010-13, coached QBs from 2017-22. He was promoted to offensive coordinator by Brian Kelly ahead of the 2020 season, replacing Chip Long.
