Tommy Tuberville probably regretted the words as soon as he said them.
Back in May, the former Auburn and Texas Tech coach compared Lubbock to Iraq during an appearance on the Rick and Bubba Show (via AL.com):
“You run me off at Auburn and you ship me to Lubbock, Texas,” he said. “I’m going to tell you what, that’s like going to Siberia. Somebody asked me, ‘What’s Lubbock look like?’ It looked like Iraq.”
Earlier this week, Tuberville called in to a Lubbock radio station to try to make amends for the insensitive remarks:
“I’m here to apologize,” Tuberville said on the Thetford & Ashby Show on ESPN Radio in Lubbock. “I shouldn’t ever said that. My mom said there’s an idiot born every day. That day, I was an idiot.”
Even when making the Lubbock-Iraq comparison, Tuberville went on to say he loves the people in the Texas city, a sentiment he echoed during his apology.
Tuberville coached at Auburn from 1999 to 2008 and at Texas Tech from 2010 to 2012.
