Tough times in Tallahassee: FSU coach Mike Norvell announces Noles to be without 3 top players, veteran QB for rest of season

Year 1 of the Mike Norvell era at Florida State is off to a rough start with the Seminoles at 2-5 on the season. It just got rougher.

On Wednesday, Norvell announced some big news on FSU’s roster moving forward. Norvell told reporters that James Blackman, Marvin Wilson, Devontay Love-Taylor and Tamorrion Terry are all out moving forward.

Blackman, the season-opening starting quarterback who has been benched, has started the transfer process. Wilson, considered the team’s best overall player, and Taylor, considered the team’s top offensive lineman, are both out with season-ending injuries. Terry, the team’s top wide receiver, was simply described as no longer with the program. Terry posted a statement on Twitter confirming he was no longer part of the team stating he does not know yet “what the next chapter will be for me.”

The absences come as FSU is set to face North Carolina State on Saturday and then Clemson, a team looking to bounce back from a double-overtime loss to Notre Dame, in two weeks.

Every program goes through growing pains with a new head coach looking to reshape the roster. While fans might see departures as an opportunity for Norvell to sign more of his hand-picked players, don’t expect FSU to have a huge 2021 class. The NCAA currently limits all programs to 25 initial counters per signing class. Programs frequently sign more than 25 prospects by “counting back” some of the players to the previous class. Norvell’s staff already did this in a big way for the 2020 class, signing 25 high school commitments (24 enrolled) and taking an additional nine transfer players. It would appear doubtful that there are any extra counters left to sign more than 25 for 2021.

Correction: The article previously indicated FSU plays Clemson next. The game is a week from Saturday.
