Kelly Bryant is up front about his reason for hitting the reset button on his senior season (redshirting and departing Clemson as a graduate transfer). It’s about giving himself the best chance to play professional football.
“Lot of people say I can’t play at the next level,” Bryant said in an interview with ESPN’s Maria Taylor. “I’m not good enough, I don’t have a strong enough arm, I’m not knowledgeable … I’m still working toward where I want to be and that’s why I’m making sure I make the right choices and get this right.”
Wherever Bryant chooses to boost his NFL resume, a team will likely benefit during the 2019 season. At least two SEC teams appear to be on Bryant’s radar. He recently visited Arkansas and has plans to visit Missouri.
Going to Arkansas would reunite Bryant with Chad Morris, who recruited him to Clemson. Two Bryant-coached quarterbacks, Tajh Boyd and Deshaun Watson, went on to be drafted by NFL teams.
At Missouri, Bryant would play for a defensive-minded head coach in Barry Odom barring any unexpected change. Odom’s current offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach is Derek Dooley, a first-timer in both roles. Dooley has NFL coaching experience, serving as a Dallas Cowboys assistant from 2013-17, but was responsible for coaching wide receivers, not quarterbacks.
