Real Madrid announced Thursday morning that one of its players had tested positive for coronavirus, making it the first EuroLeague player to test positive.

That player turned out to be former Georgia standout Trey Thompkins. The 6-foot-10 Thompkins played at Georgia from 2008-2011, playing in 89 games and averaging 15.7 points per game.

The 29-year-old Thompkins released a message via social media regarding his illness.

“Thank you to EVERYONE who has sent love and/or checked up on me,” he wrote on social media. “I’m feeling great and just waiting for the virus to pass at this point. Really means a lot.”

Following his career at Georgia, Thompkins was drafted in the 2nd round of the 2011 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Clippers, where he played through 2013. Prior to landing at Real Madrid, Thompkins played for Nizhny Novgorod in 2014-15.

Thompkins was named to the SEC’s All-Freshman Team and a First-Team All-SEC selection during his 3-year career.

The coronavirus has wreaked havoc on the world over the last several days. Specifically in sports, cancelations and postponements have dominated headlines. Thankfully, for now, it appears Thompkins is doing OK.
