With his phenomenal second-half performance in the national championship game, Tua Tagovailoa cemented his place in Alabama history. On Saturday, he officially put his name in the Crimson Tide record books.
A third-quarter touchdown pass to Irv Smith Jr. was Tagovailoa’s 31st of the year, passing AJ McCarron to give him the new single-season record. McCarron set his mark in 14 games in the 2012 season. Tagovailoa is only through 11 games and will have plenty more opportunities to add to it in 2018.
After the game, the sophomore quarterback gave credit to his supporting cast and remained focus on the team’s big-picture goals.
“A lot of credit belongs to my teammates,” Tagovailoa told reporters. “It’s a tremendous opportunity that we’ve done as an offense to have gotten to this point. Thirty-one touchdowns, that’s cool. But we’ve still got a game to finish off this season, and we still have another game after that, too. We’re more focused on finishing off the season the right way.”
