Tua Tagovailoa’s first-half numbers suggest everyone is playing for second this season

The only thing scarier than No. 1 Alabama having a quarterback like Tua Tagovailoa is the thought that he might be getting better every week.

But that’s how things look in the first half against Arkansas on Saturday, during which the sophomore has thrown for more touchdowns than incompletions. At halftime, Tagovailoa is 10-of-12 for 334 yards and four touchdowns as the Crimson Tide lead 41-14.

This is arguably his best game so far and adds even more to his eye-popping season-long stats. In his first season as Alabama’s starter, Tagovailoa is 76-of-100 for 1,495 yards, 18 touchdowns and no interceptions. For comparison, junior Jalen Hurts — whom Tagovailoa supplanted as the starter at halftime of last year’s national championship game and then to begin this season — threw for just 17 touchdowns all of last year.

As it stands now, the Heisman Trophy race looks like it’s Tagovailoa and then everyone else.
