2-minute drill: Wet weather could affect Kurt Roper’s debut

Story after story has been written about the Kurt Roper up-tempo, spread offense he was bringing to the much maligned Florida Gators offense and rightly so, especially after the season they put up in 2013.
Fans were supposed to get an idea of what to expect this season out of Roper’s offense last week against Idaho, but as we all know, Mother Nature didn’t allow that to happen.
This week, Florida and Roper’s offense will take the field against Eastern Michigan. Under Roper, the Gators figure to increase their number of plays per game, playing at a quicker pace and with a bit more explosiveness. However, a less than favorable weather report for today’s game against Eastern Michigan could alter how the Gators operate this afternoon.
Rainstorms will be around the Gainesville area at kickoff and throughout the day. Wet weather will definitely affect the speed of the Florida offense and they may be forced to run the ball more, which would mean relying heavily on running backs Kelvin Taylor and Matt Jones.
Either way, Roper may not be unable to fully unleash the offense like he would want to, if the weather is poor in The Swamp later today. A more conservative approach would probably be more appropriate. Regardless of how the offense’s plan is altered, nothing less than an impressive debut from Roper’s system will satisfy Florida fans as all eyes will be on the offense in their season debut.
Drew Laing will be providing analysis and insight on Florida, Georgia, Missouri and South Carolina.
