Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and Kentucky linebacker Josh Allen have been arguably the best players on either side of the ball this season.

So it’s not surprise to see them among the five finalists for the Walter Camp Football Foundation 2018 Player of the Year Award, a list that was released Wednesday. The other three nominees are all quarterbacks — Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray, Washington State’s Gardner Minshew and West Virginia’s Will Grier.

Tagovailoa leads the country in passer rating (212.5) and has tossed 36 touchdowns against just two interceptions, numbers that have strongly bolstered his case as Heisman Trophy frontrunner. Behind his electric play, the No. 1 Crimson Tide has averaged 49 points per game, second-most nationally.

The No. 15 Wildcats’ surge to a 9-3 season has come largely thanks to Allen, who is tied for first in the nation in forced fumbles (five), second in sacks (14) and tied for ninth in tackles for loss (18.5).

This year’s Walter Camp Award winner will be revealed Dec. 6, and he will receive the honor Jan. 12, 2019. The winner will be determined from a vote by all 130 FBS head coaches and sports information directors.
