Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson has emerged as one of the most exciting players in college football this season, landing at No. 3 in ESPN’s midseason Top 25 player rankings.

Here’s some analysis from ESPN’s Paolo Uggetti on why Simpson earned the No. 3 spot on the list:

“In his first full season as the Tide’s starter, Kalen DeBoer and offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb have unlocked Simpson’s talent and harnessed it into a potential Heisman Trophy-winning season. The junior from Tennessee has a 70% completion rate, 16 touchdowns and only 1 interception. But despite an offensive line that has allowed 12 sacks this season, Simpson has been more than just a steadying presence under center; through six games, he has been arguably the best quarterback in the sport.”

Simpson, who was unranked in ESPN’s preseason list, has thrown for 1,678 yards, thrown 18 total touchdowns, and has only one interception through the first half of the season. Even with an offensive line that has allowed 12 sacks, Simpson has been steady, dynamic, and often spectacular, keeping the Tide competitive in every matchup.

The junior quarterback headlines an ESPN midseason list that leads with Miami defensive lineman Rueben Bain Jr., Texas Tech linebacker Jacob Rodriguez, Ohio State safety Caleb Downs, and Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza in the top five.

Alabama will play Tennessee at home on Saturday in Week 8.
