In an era of college athletics where it feels like players are riding a carousel, Ty Simpson is a breath of fresh air.

The former 5-star quarterback attempted just five passes as a freshman at Alabama in 2022. He could have jumped ship and gone on to play somewhere else after that. But he stayed in Tuscaloosa because there’s nowhere else he’d rather be.

Yesterday evening, Simpson was officially named the Crimson Tide’s starting quarterback. He spoke with reporters about the news on Tuesday, saying, “it’s a dream come true” to earn Alabama’s QB1 job.

“I came here out of high school wanting to be the starting quarterback,” Simpson said. “I’m just excited and I can’t thank my teammates enough for making me look good and I’m ready for the opportunity.”

Simpson beat out Austin Mack and 5-star freshman Keelon Russell to top Alabama’s depth chart. The redshirt junior completed just 58.0% of his passes (29/50) in limited action through three seasons, but reportedly shined through the Crimson Tide’s camp.

With the QB competition in his rearview, Simpson can devote his full attention to game preparation. He’ll have to be ready from the jump, as the Crimson Tide begin their season with a true road contest against the Florida State Seminoles on Aug. 30.
