Ty Simpson sets all-time Alabama record in first half vs. ULM
Once upon a time, the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks defeated the Alabama Crimson Tide. Ty Simpson has certainly heard the tale. With another contest versus ULM on tap today, he decided to snuff out any chance of a repeat before it had the chance to begin.
Simpson surgically dissected the Warhawks through the first 30 minutes of gametime in Tuscaloosa on Saturday night. The redshirt junior completed all 17 of his passes in the first half, setting the new Alabama record for consecutive completions to open a contest.
Simpson somehow is the third blue blood program passer to break a school record this year. In Week 1, Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer topped Baker Mayfield’s Sooner debut passing yardage mark. Then, earlier this afternoon versus Grambling, Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin eclipsed Will Howard’s total for consecutive completions to open a game.
Simpson’s accomplishment is one thing, but he wasn’t the only perfect Crimson Tide quarterback in the first half. Backup signal-caller Austin Mack went 3-of-3 for 30 yards and a score of his own. With Mack’s numbers, Alabama passers completed 20-of-20 passes for 256 yards and 4 touchdowns in the opening 2 quarters.
Replicating anything close to this start next week will be tough for Simpson. The Crimson Tide hosts the Wisconsin Badgers next Saturday at 12 p.m. E.T.
