UCF WR, return specialist opts to redshirt ahead of Florida game, per report

UCF will reportedly be down a notable contributor when it travels to Gainesville to face Florida.
Per Brandon Helwig of UCFSports.com on Rivals, Knights wide receiver and return specialist Xavier Townsend has opted out to redshirt with the intent of entering the transfer portal.
Per multiple sources, UCF WR and return specialist Xavier Townsend opted out Tuesday in order to preserve his redshirt with the intent of transferring following the season.

Out of Berkeley Prep School in Tampa, Townsend joined the Knights in 2022. Over the past 3 seasons, Townsend has appeared in 29 games, making 14 starts. This season, Townsend is averaging 110 all-purpose yards per game.
Townsend appeared in UCF’s first 4 games of the 2024 campaign, starting 3 times. On the season, he has logged 10 catches for 69 yards and 1 touchdown. He has also rushed 12 times for 88 yards.
Townsend has returned both kickoffs and punts for the Knights. He has 7 kickoff returns on the season for 162 yards. He also has 10 punt returns for 121 yards.
Gus Malzahn’s Knights come into The Swamp with a 3-1 record. UCF has wins over New Hampshire (57-3), Sam Houston (45-14) and TCU (35-34). The Knights stumbled in Week 5, falling at home to Colorado in a 48-21 blowout.
Saturday’s game is set for a 7:45 p.m. kickoff, airing on the SEC Network.
