The UCLA Bruins have their new head coach in former Oregon and NFL coach Chip Kelly, but the details of the contract are a bit surprising.
According to UCLA, Kelly signed a five-year contract worth $23.3 million — less than $5 million per year. Since Kelly was also heavily pursued by Florida, it’s somewhat surprising that he isn’t making more money, and that he has such a large buyout — at $9 million.
However, the Bruins have their guy and will try to break out of a long string of disappointing seasons in which they’ve played second fiddle to USC in Los Angeles:

While Florida is on to Plan B, Kelly will prepare to take over the UCLA program after the Bruins won their regular-season finale over Cal 30-27 to clinch a bowl berth.
Whether or not Kelly coaches in the Bruins’ bowl game remains to be seen, but he has his contract with the school and will be a fixture in Los Angeles for years to come.
