The debut rankings for the College Football Playoff were released on Tuesday, and the SEC claimed the top two spots in the Top 25.
The Georgia Bulldogs snatched the No. 1 overall spot in the rankings after a dominant start to the year. The Bulldogs have been impressive from the jump behind a strong defense, dynamic rushing attack, and the play of freshman QB Jake Fromm. Georgia also has a road win over No. 3 Notre Dame on its resume.
The Alabama Crimson Tide came in at No. 2 after dominating the No. 1 spot in the AP Poll all season. The No. 2 ranking is not a knock on the Tide but is simply a reflection of Georgia’s resume to this point. Alabama will get a chance to improve its resume down the stretch as three of the Tide’s final four games will be against SEC West opponents currently ranked inside the top 20.
The ending to this season should be a good one, and Alabama and Georgia are hoping to meet in Atlanta for the SEC Championship Game with an undefeated record. Doing so would give both teams a shot at heading to the Playoff with a chance to capture a national championship.
The initial rankings provide a better picture of potential Playoff matchups, and Bet Online provided updated odds for the national title following the rankings announcement. Here is a look at those odds:
Alabama remains the heavy betting favorite to capture the national championship this season while Ohio State comes in at second at 3.5/1 odds to win the title. Georgia, the current No. 1 team, comes in third at 8/1 odds to win the championship.
