Urban Meyer broke down the Tennessee-Ohio State first-round CFP game on the latest episode of the Triple Option Podcast.
The former Ohio State head coach is unsurprisingly picking the Buckeyes to come away victorious on their home field, but he did caution against picking a runaway win for the Scarlet and Gray. Ohio State is a 7.5-point favorite over the Vols, according to most sportsbooks.
“I think the point spread is right. I’m going to go with the Buckeyes in a low-scoring game,” Meyer said before explaining why this is is a complicated matchup for the Buckeyes.
Meyer highlighted the season-ending injury to starting center Seth McLaughlin from last month, which further exposed an already-shorthanded offensive line against Michigan. He also expressed appreciation for Tennessee’s defensive line, which proved to be one of the best units in the country during the regular season.
“I think the strength of Tennessee is their defense … I watched them yesterday because I wanted to see the SEC D-line, guess what Mark? They’ve got an SEC D-line,” Meyer said. “Big, thick cats that get their feet across the line of scrimmage and that’s not good for Ohio State.
“I do think Ohio State’s got the best defense in the country so it’ll be a 16-10 type game, I really believe that. I’ve got Ohio State winning but Tennessee covering.”
With that type of score prediction, it’s safe to say Meyer likes the under as well. The total for this game is set at 46.5 at most shops.
Kickoff between the Vols and Buckeyes and Columbus is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET on Saturday night.
