Verne Lundquist shares his recollection of his most famous call, ‘The Kick Six’
Verne Lundquist had an incredible career calling games across the sports landscape and for various leagues and outlets but the former voice of the “SEC on CBS” will forever be known to SEC fans for one call — “The Kick Six.”
We’ve all seen the play at least 100 times by now and the man that called it live on national television calls the play the “most remarkable finish to a college football game ever.”
Considering the stakes on the line in the game, undefeated Alabama not only lost the SEC West division title on the play, the Crimson Tide lost the opportunity to defend its national title on The Plains that Saturday night, the memorable play was even more meaningful to both sides. The jubilation from Auburn fans for stealing away the SEC West title and agony of losing it for Alabama fans compound the significance of the play.
In a recent post from the “SEC on CBS,” Lundquist and CBS Sports Producer Craig Silver share their recollections of the play that defined that season in the SEC.
The way Lundquist tells it, he yelled “no flags!” during Chris Davis’ run without even checking for them due to the hysteria of the moment.
Check it out below:
"I called the touchdown for Auburn and said with authority 'no flags!' And then I thought, for just that long: 'Dear Lord, please don't let there be any flags.'"
The rest was history for @AuburnFootball.
