Few could have seen this coming from Danielle Hunter following his selection in the 2015 NFL Draft.

The former LSU Tiger racked up only 4.5 sacks during his three-year career in Baton Rouge but has since turned into one of the NFL’s most feared pass rushers after joining the Vikings. Since his third-round selection in 2015, Hunter has 25.5 sacks for Minnesota, which is the most for any player that has entered the league since 2015.

The Vikings weren’t going to let him close to free agency after that level of production. The team announced it had signed the 23-year-old pass rusher to an extension on Wednesday.

“Once you start thinking, that’s when you slow down. A lot of pass rushers tend to overthink because they’re trying to be perfect,” Hunter said in a prepared statement. “At my position, you’re not going to be perfect. The best thing about it is to go out there and continue to train and work on your technique, and your body will react.

“[I’m going to] continue to build. I’m young. I came in at 20 years old. I’m just going to continue to build.  I have, hopefully if God lets it happen, hopefully a lot of years ahead of me to play football. Just growing and keep working.”

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, Hunter’s new deal is a five-year contract with $40 million in guarantees. His signing bonus is a whopping $15 million.
