Virginia Tech was hoping to go to Norfolk and earn a victory in Brent Pry’s first game as the Hokies’ head coach.
The Old Dominion Monarchs had other plans.
In the first half, a bad snap on a Virginia Tech field-goal attempt led to a Monarchs’ scoop and score, giving them a 10-7 lead.

After hanging tough defensively in the second half, the Monarchs’ offense finally punched the ball into the end zone with 33 seconds left to take a 20-17 lead over the visiting Hokies:

A last-ditch effort by the Hokies failed, as the Monarchs snagged an interception on a desperation heave from Virginia Tech.
Old Dominion was picked to finish last in the Sun Belt East. It seems the Monarchs have other plans. Naturally, fans stormed the field after the massive victory over an in-state Power 5 foe.
It’s back to the drawing board for Pry and the Hokies now that the debut game didn’t go according to plan.
