Virginia Tech team captain reportedly charged with DWI ahead of Week 1 matchup with South Carolina
The South Carolina Gamecocks’ 2025 campaign is their most hyped college football season in over a decade. LaNorris Sellers and Co. are eager to build off a strong 2024 showing and earn a College Football Playoff berth this year. To do that, they’ll need to start hot. Fortunately, their Week 1 opponent may have just made that easier to do.
According to Tech Sideline’s Andy Bitter, Virginia Tech linebacker and team captain Caleb Woodson was charged with a DWI on Saturday. Bitter added the offense is listed as a Class 1 Misdemeanor, and that Woodson has a Sept. 9 court date. The Hokies released a statement on the matter at approximately 10:15 a.m. ET Tuesday morning:
Woodson, a junior, posted the second-most tackles (72) for Virginia Tech in 2024. His 8 tackles for loss were the most of any Hokie linebacker. He presumably holds a key role in Virginia Tech’s game plan to limit Sellers’ dual-threat abilities. Now, it’s possible he won’t even be present for the contest.
The Gamecocks are currently 7.5-point favorites over the Hokies according to the latest college football betting lines at BetMGM.
Kickoff for their game — which is taking place at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA — is set for 3:00 p.m. E.T. on Aug. 31.
