The Walter Camp National Player of the Year award has come out with 5 finalists for its annual award, and Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker is in the group.
The award is given to the nation’s most outstanding college football player. The winner will be announced on Dec. 8.
The other finalists are Michigan RB Blake Corum, TCU QB Max Duggan, Ohio State QB CJ Stroud and Southern Call QB Caleb Williams.
Hooker is one of the most popular players in the SEC, and fans around the league have praised his class and demeanor, especially after a season-ending knee injury was suffered at South Carolina. Hooker was applauded for traveling to Vanderbilt for Tennessee’s regular-season finale, and supporting backup QB Joe Milton.
Hooker is a sixth-year senior and captain of the nation’s No. 1 offense, and he engineered the first 10-win regular season since 2003 and the program’s first-ever No. 1 ranking by the College Football Playoff committee when the rankings debuted on Nov. 1.
His production was especially impressive, with 3,565 yards of total offense, completing 229-of-329 passes (69.6 percent) for 3,135 yards with 27 touchdowns and just 2 interceptions while he rushed 104 times for 430 yards and 5 TDs.
