A year ago, it appeared Cam Sims was going to be a feel-good “underdog achieves success” story. The former Alabama wide receiver was off the radar of most NFL teams when his college carer ended and only two teams were interested in signing him as an undrafted free agent. He landed in Washington and turned heads during the Redskins training camp, but he would suffer a major setback early in his rookie season. In the opening seconds of Game 1 of the 2018 season, Sims suffered a high-ankle season that sidelined him the rest of the year. He’s healthy again and the Redskins are hoping to see him pick up where he left off.

“We had high hopes for him coming out of training camp,” Washington coach Jay Gruden said at a recent media availability. “He’s big, strong and physical, plays with a great motor, passion. Getting him healthy, watching him work to get himself ready for this time, this opportunity again, I think he’s going to take advantage of it.”

Sims only caught 41 passes during his Alabama career, but was off to a strong start as a rookie. The 6-5 pass-catcher led all Washington receivers with five catches for 131 yards in the 2018 preseason. In a feature by the Washington Post, Sims told reporter Matthew Gutierrez that he worked hard to get back and trained at home with a Jugs machine. Now he has to prove himself again in training camp.

“The only thing I can do is hope right now,” he said. “And work.”
