The initial early signing period has ended, and analysts and coaches continue to debate whether or not the new period is good for college football.

On the surface, a lot of recruits were ready to make their decision. More than two-thirds of the ESPN 300 recruits signed in the early period and a number of other players followed suit in signing early.

With the early period officially behind us, ESPN recruiting analysts took time to breakdown the period. In a video shared by ESPNU, Matt Schick asked if the early period had achieved its intended purpose.

Tom Luginbill answered that he believes it did achieve its purpose, but he also pointed out there are always some unintended consequences from any new venture:

“There are going to be some unintended consequences,” said Luginbill. “There are going to be some tweaks that need to be made.”

On the other hand, Tom VanHaaren said he wants to wait until February to pass judgement:

“I want to wait until February to see if these prospects are still happy with the decision to sign now,” VanHaaren explained.

Here is video of the discussion:

It is hard to pass any judgement at this time, but there looks to be both positives and negatives associated with the December signing period.
