Departing Clemson QB Kelly Bryant’s decision to use two college football policies on redshirting and transferring as a graduate student to bow out of the 2018 season and use his remaining eligibility elsewhere sparked a debate in the CFB community. As one might imagine, Bryant has faced his share of criticism for opting to leave the team during the season.
Bryant’s decision to redshirt for 2018 and transfer somewhere he’ll be immediately eligible was already the biggest story of Week 5 even before Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence, a true freshman who unseated Bryant as the Tigers’ starting signal-caller, suffered an injury in Saturday’s game.
Bryant has his share of critics, but FOX Sports college football analyst Joel Klatt recently expressed support for Bryant’s decision. He had some strong words for those who call Bryant’s decision “selfish.”
Klatt points out that for Bryant to have any chances of making an NFL roster, he must continue to develop as a passer, something that can only be done by playing in more games, not by being the backup to Lawrence at Clemson. Klatt’s full comments are in the video below:
“Kelly Bryant has an opportunity to extend his football life & actually control his own future… and you think it’s selfish??? Give me a break.” – @joelklatt pic.twitter.com/FcJwxVAaGh
