For weeks now, the biggest on-the-field storyline in the SEC involved Auburn. Specifically, who would be their starting quarterback for the 2019 season.
All spring, four guys split equal reps — Joey Gatewood, Bo Nix, Malik Willis and Cord Sandberg. Now, it appears coach Gus Malzahn has narrowed the competition down to two finalists.
As you can see below, Malzahn said Nix and Gatewood are still in the competition, with either one of them likely being named the starter for Week 1 against Oregon:

“First of all, Joey Gatewood and Bo Nix are sort of 1 and 1A,” he said. “One of those two guys will be our starting quarterback for our first game. They’ll compete during the summer.”
Nix is a true freshman and Gatewood is a redshirt freshman, so the Tigers are going with youth at the position.
Now, we wait and see what the future holds for Willis and Sandberg.
