After spending the 2018 season in the Monday Night Football booth calling games with Joe Tessitore, legendary Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten is suiting up again in 2019 after coming out of retirement.
With quarterback Dak Prescott’s improved wide receiver corps, it was unknown coming into the Cowboys’ season-opener against the rival New York Giants how much Witten would contribute on the field at 37 years old.
In the first half of Sunday’s game, the former Tennessee tight end proved he can be a lot more than a locker room leader after taking a season off. Witten caught a four-yard touchdown pass from Prescott to take a 14-7 lead over the Giants early in the second quarter, and the 69th overall pick in the 2003 NFL Draft caught his 69th career NFL touchdown.
In his three-year career at Tennessee, Witten gained nearly 800 receiving yards and seven touchdowns, and the 16-year pro went on to make the Pro Bowl 11 times with the Cowboys.
Witten received plenty of criticism for his color commentary abilities on Monday Night Football but decided to come back to football, where he believes he can still get it done on the highest level. He seems to be showing it so far.
