Mississippi State had plenty of reason to celebrate late Saturday night.

The Bulldogs rang up a 63-6 win over Stephen F. Austin thanks to a big night from backup QB Keytaon Thompson and 17 tackles for loss from the defense. It was the first win in Starkville for Joe Moorhead, the first-year coach.

After the game, Moorhead led a spirited talk with his players that summarized their fast start.

“For a first game of a brand-new program, for us to come out and put that many points on the scoreboard, be able to shut them down on defense, to be able to play very, very well on special teams, that speaks volumes for y’all, that speaks volumes for this assistant coaching staff, most importantly that speaks volumes for this program,” Moorhead said.

Mississippi State will go on the road this week to play Kansas State at noon ET on ESPN.

“We got to get better on this film, and you’ve got to understand this opponent we’re going to play this upcoming week is an incredibly disciplined, fundamentally sound ball club,” Moorhead said. “It’s a Power 5 team on the road, and I don’t think we’ve played a Power 5 team on the road in a very long time, so we’ve got to be ready to get this one.”

Athletics director John Cohen then presented Moorhead, “the man who has everything,” his first cowbell. That gave way to a energetic rendition of the school’s fight song.
