This may only be Matt Luke’s second Egg Bowl as Ole Miss coach, but he’s no stranger to the Rebels’ rivalry against Mississippi State.

Luke played at Ole Miss from 1995-98, then served as an assistant for the Rebels in 1999, from 2002-05 and from 2012-17. He took over as Ole Miss’ coach midseason in 2017.

Before the two rivals play this year’s Egg Bowl on Thanksgiving night, Luke talked about the history of the series during his press conference on Monday.

“It’s huge for the people of Mississippi. It always has been,” Luke told the media. “It’s a game that means so much to so many people. This year is no different. It’s 365 days of bragging rights. It’s always been important in my family ever since I can remember.”

Last year, Ole Miss beat Mississippi State, 31-28, on the road. The Rebels host the matchup this season.

It will be the final home game for Ole Miss’ seniors, which Luke said will make this year’s Egg Bowl even more special.

“These guys have given a lot,” Luke told the media. “With it being the Egg Bowl, that’s huge, but being their last game and senior night, it adds another level to it.”

The Rebels and Bulldogs are set to kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET on Thursday.
