Before Randy Moss played 14 years in the NFL, he played college football at Marshall, but on ESPN Sunday morning, Moss told a story of how he nearly ended up in the SEC.

Moss played at Marshall from 1995-97, while quarterback Peyton Manning was at Tennessee from 1994-97. Given the numbers each player put up in college and the NFL, it’s fun to imagine that kind of combination teaming up in the SEC.

In the ’97 season alone, Moss collected 96 catches for 1,820 yards and 26 touchdowns.

Moss explained that during a recruiting visit on a Sunday, he went to a basketball game, and heard that Manning wanted him to come to Tennessee. Manning was in Virginia, but came back to meet Moss that day.

“That meant a lot to me knowing, of course I didn’t choose Tennessee, but just being able to follow a guy like Peyton,” Moss said. “Being at the Heisman Trophy (ceremony) with him and Charles and Ryan Leaf, and then following throughout his whole career, I am definitely proud to say that I lived in an era, our era, was some of the all-time greats.”
