Tennessee’s defense had a long day on Saturday against Georgia State.

The Vols gave up 213 rushing yards on 53 attempts by the Panthers. But on this particular play captured on video by David Ubben of The Athletic, QB Dan Ellington exposed the Vols on their questionable defensive alignment. Two defensive ends and a linebacker all rushing from the same side? What were they thinking?

He converted a third down and 10 play by running the ball around left end to the first down marker.

Ellington himself finished with 14 carries for 61 yards and a TD.

It’s been mockingly called a spread defense, or a two-gap alignment, meaning you only fill two gaps.

No matter, it won’t be a popular sight for the Vols during film breakdown this week.
