The third version of the CFP Poll produced a different reaction from the initial ranking, when fans and analysts wondered why Alabama, with one loss, was included in the top four.
Alabama, which silenced the skeptics that week by dominating LSU, jumped from No. 4 to No. 2 in the playoff poll last week.
The Tide made a convincing argument Saturday, in a 31-6 victory at ranked Mississippi State, that it should leapfrog No. 1 Clemson.
Clemson, which is No. 1 in the AP and Coaches polls, turned in a workmanlike 37-27 victory at Syracuse.
Ohio State, which is No. 2 in the AP and Coaches polls, won 28-3 at Illinois.
Alabama was No. 3 in the AP and Coaches polls.
The Crimson Tide won’t help its strength of schedule Saturday against Charleston Southern but close the regular season Nov. 28 in the Iron Bowl at Auburn.
