Who are the SEC’s top 10 players — regardless of position — through six weeks this season? There are several methods used to define this group of Heisman frontrunners, defensive player of the year candidates and irreplaceable assets to their respective teams, but the easiest way is best.

  1. Dak Prescott, QB, Mississippi State
  2. Todd Gurley, RB, Georgia
  3. Shane Ray, DL, Mizzou
  4. Amari Cooper, WR, Alabama
  5. Preston Smith, DL, Mississippi State
  6. Kenny Hill, QB, Texas A&M
  7. Senquez Golson, DB, Ole Miss
  8. Landon Collins, DB, Alabama
  9. Alex Collins, RB, Arkansas
  10. Robert Nkemdiche, DL, Ole Miss

Takeaways: One of college football’s most talked about players during the offseason, Gurley’s met expectations as the SEC’s leading rusher with 8.2 yards per carry and eight touchdowns on the ground. Now that Gurley’s been suspended, how will it change the MVP race? … Alongside Cody Prewitt in a loaded secondary, Golson leads the SEC in interceptions (4) and passes defended (7). His acrobatic pick in the back of the end zone last weekend helped the Rebels upset top-ranked Alabama. Golson’s picked off more passes than four other SEC teams … Collins, a home-run threat in the Arkansas backfield, exploded for 212 yards at Texas Tech and has two other 130-plus yard performances this fall.

Just missed the cut: Myles Garrett, DL, Texas A&M; Cody Prewitt, DB, Ole Miss; Vernon Hargreaves, DB, Florida; Nick Marshall, QB, Auburn; Elliott Fry, K, South Carolina; A.J. Stamps, DB, Kentucky; Markus Golden, DL, Mizzou
