Shane Beamer’s South Carolina Gamecocks suffered a disappointing loss on Saturday at the hands of the Tennessee Volunteers.
The Vols beat the Gamecocks by a score of 41-20 and Spencer Rattler was held to just 169 yards with 0 passing TDs.
After the game, Beamer offered a blunt assessment of his team’s performance.
“You are what your record says you are, and right now we’re a 2-3 team,” Beamer declared.

Beamer was asked what went wrong, and the coach pointed to problems converting on 3rd and 4th downs.
Beamer opening up talking about missed opportunities:
“When you go 2-of-14 on third downs and 2-of-5 fourth downs, you make it tough on yourself to win.”

The Gamecocks allowed 6 sacks on the night and Rattler could not get in any kind of rhythm. While Rattler was sacked 6 times, Joe Milton III was only brought down once.
Overall, Beamer said he was “proud of the effort,” but the team “did not play well enough to win the game.”

The team will have a chance to regroup with a bye week in Week 6 before taking on the Florida Gators in Week 7.
