Here’s what a few head coaches said after non-conference Saturday:
DAN MULLEN after Mississippi State gave up 548 total yards in a win over UAB: “We’ve got some things that we have to get fixed, but it’s hard to get wins. Half of the teams playing today aren’t going to celebrate those wins, so we’re going to celebrate and enjoy our win.”
NICK SABAN in reference to quarterback play — Blake Sims and Jacob Coker — during the Crimson Tide’s shutout win: “Blake played well except for the one play, and Jake got some experience. I think that experience should help his confidence and his ability to play with a little bit better rhythm as he gets that confidence. He did some very good things as well.”
STEVE SPURRIER on South Carolina’s 33-23 win over East Carolina, the 200th of his SEC coaching career: “We are not quite as talented as some of our teams in the past. That is obvious, but the kids played their hearts out.”
HUGH FREEZE after the Ole Miss defense stuffed Vanderbilt: “Theoretically, in my mind, I’ll give them a shutout. We had a fumble down there and they held them to a field goal and that’s all they can really do in that scenario. I think our defense has a chance to be good. We stopped the run primarily and we got some pressure on the quarterback and we didn’t give up explosive plays and I think that’s key for us this year.”
WILL MUSCHAMP once the Gators put the finishing touches on a 65-point beating of Eastern Michigan in their first game of the season: “We just needed a win and get out and play. We’re much improved. It is not a false bravado. It’s real. We are a better football team and we are much improved. When you get that amount of playmakers for your team back, you’re going to look like a lot better football coach.”
GARY PINKEL on beating his old team, Toledo, 49-24: “I’m glad this day is over with, coming here, playing and all the stuff that goes with it. Glad we have the chance move on.”
BRET BIELEMA after his Razorbacks dominated Nicholls State: “Our goal all week was to prepare with the intensity that we needed in all three phases of the game and play that way. I was excited with how our team came out and played on both sides of the ball, and a huge pat on the back for all of our guys for staying involved in the game.”
