The heart and soul of the LSU defense, All-American linebacker Whit Weeks, played just 3 snaps against Florida on Saturday before being forced to leave the game.
Following a tackle on Florida’s Vernell Brown III, Weeks was flagged for targeting. That call was upheld and Weeks was ejected from the game. Weeks had recorded 7 tackles through LSU’s first 2 games of the season.
Because the play happened in the first half, Weeks will not be forced to miss any time next week when the Tigers host Southeast Louisiana.
But the loss of the starting inside ‘backer is obviously a huge blow in the immediate present. Weeks was a dynamo last season. He posted 125 tackles to lead the LSU defense. He also recorded 10 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, 3 pass breakups, and 2 forced fumbles.
Weeks had 3 tackles in last season’s 27-16 loss to Florida in Gainesville.
Weeks’s brother, West, entered Saturday’s game leading the defense with 13 tackles. Davhon Keys is likely to see an expanded role. Tylen Singleton and Jaiden Braker were listed as the backup Will linebackers behind Weeks on the depth chart ahead of the game.
