Who is Khalil Tate? 5 things to know about Arizona’s quarterback
By Kevin Duffey
Published:
Khalil Tate is Arizona’s senior quarterback. After a really impressive campaign in 2017 in which he came out of nowhere, Tate did not have a great 2018 season. Tate, under second-year head coach Kevin Sumlin, is looking to have a successful 2019 season. So who is Khalil Tate? Here are 5 things you should know about Arizona’s senior quarterback:
Khalil Tate is healthy
Perhaps the most important thing to know about Khalil Tate going into the 2019 season is that he’s healthy. Tate was reportedly dealing with nagging injuries for a good portion of the 2018 season which might explain some of his struggles last year. After lighting it up in 2017, Tate’s performance regressed somewhat in 2018 during a disappointing overall season for the Arizona Wildcats. Now healthy, Tate will have the opportunity to take another step in his career.
Khalil Tate perhaps made his biggest impact as a rusher
When Tate took the college football world by storm in 2017, much of it was due to his rushing from the quarterback position. In 2017, Tate rushed for over 1400 yards and averaged over 9 yards per carry. In 2018, Tate rushed for only 224 yards and averaged 3.0 yards per carry. This was a dramatic decline in rushing performance and is likely to be a major contributor to Tate’s struggles and Arizona’s mediocre season. If Tate wants an impactful 2019 season, he’s going to have to be a threat on the ground.
As a passer, Tate has been somewhat consistent
While Tate’s 2017 season is known for being special, when it comes to passing, his 2017 wasn’t too far off from his 2018 season. His completion percentage dropped a little in 2018, but his touchdown to INT ratio went up very nicely. To get to an elite level, I’d like to see Khalil Tate get his completion percentage back above 60 percent.

Tate set the record for rushing yards by a quarterback in a single game. This game really put Tate on the national map and turned him into a household name of college football fans.
