Will Muschamp agrees to salary change, lowered buyout at South Carolina

Although it will cost him some money in the future, South Carolina head coach Will Muschamp gets to keep running backs coach Thomas Brown on his staff.
Gamecocks athletic director Ray Tanner shared at a press conference on Tuesday that Muschamp agreed to amendments of his contract, which were approved by the Board of Trustees, so that Brown could receive a raise next season, according to The Athletic’s Josh Kendall.
Muschamp was set to make $4.6 million in 2020, but he’ll now make $4.4 million as he’ll lose $0.2 million of outside compensation. While the length of his contract is the same, there will now be a a $200,000 escalator clause, which saves South Carolina $3 million over that time.
It also affected Muschamp’s buyout amount, should he be fired after the 2020 season. Instead of receiving $15.3 million, he would get $13.2 million in that scenario.
Brown received a two-year extension, and his salary was raised from $300,000 to $500,000. He is signed with the Gamecocks through Dec. 31, 2021. The running backs coach just completed his first season on South Carolina’s staff after spending the three previous years at Miami (Fla.).
Tanner also announced the hiring of offensive coordinator Mike Bobo on Tuesday.
