South Carolina will have its hands full Saturday against an Ole Miss offense that scored 38.4 points per game, good for 21st nationally.
During the SEC Coaches Teleconference on Wednesday, Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp detailed what his defense will have to do to slow down the Rebels (5-3, 1-3 SEC), who welcome South Carolina (4-3, 3-3) to Oxford at noon ET on Saturday.
Below is everything Muschamp said during his appearance on the teleconference.
Do you challenge your defensive backs going up against the Ole Miss wide receivers?
- They have to step up facing these guys, from a coverage standpoint and tackling at the second and third level. There has been some improvement, they just need to come on.
Are you happy with your guys?
- No, we aren’t comfortable at all. We are just trying to find guys that will do what we ask them to do. That’s where we are right now.
On the new redshirt rule, does it your change mindset?
- Yeah, you let guys go out there more. I think it helps when you are thin. You don’t want to burn a guy’s year by putting him out there, and now you can.
What have you seen from Ole Miss’ offense?
- Really efficient. The tempo they play with. (Jordan Ta’amu) is completing 65 percent of his passes. Scottie Philips is a good player. The left side of the offensive line. AJ Brown, Lodge are very good receivers.
