Will Muschamp provides spring South Carolina updates including transfers, position changes
The Gamecocks took a major step forward in Will Muschamp’s second in Columbia and the process of continuing that progression in 2018 begins this week with the start of spring practice.
South Carolina will begin spring practice Wednesday, Feb. 28. The spring period end with the Garnet & Black spring game set for March 31.
Before the practice field can be used, Muschamp met with the local media to discuss his thoughts on the upcoming spring period. Here are the highlights of his press conference:
- OUT FOR SPRING: Jamyest Williams, Antoine Wilder, Ernest Jones
- LIMITED FOR SPRING: Jaylin Dickerson, Bryson Allen Williams, Shi Smith, Mon Denson
- TRANSFERS: C.J. Freeman, Jerad Washington
- POSITION CHANGES: Zack Bailey: Guard, Donell Stanley: Center, Malik Young: Defensive line
- Who will play right tackle? Blake Camper will get the first look there.
- On QB reps this spring: Every position is up for grabs on this roster. Michael Scarnecchia will start at backup QB.
- On Deebo Samuel’s rehab/return: He attacked the offseason like I thought he would. He’s a great young man. He’s moved on and moved on well. He will gradually move thru spring but he’s been cleared.
- On Stephen Davis Jr.’s return: Stephen came to me and wanted another opportunity and we gave him that.
- On the QB depth on the roster: I feel much better, we have four scholarship players that we feel confident about.
- What has QB coach Dan Werner brought to the program? Trying to dictate the pace of play, trying to speed things up (the biggest thing).
- On new OC Bryan McClendon: At the end of the day, the kids have to have faith in that person and he does a great job of that.
- On his players handling the success of last season: We’ve handled the little success we experienced well — it has been very little.
