Josh Belk took an unusual route to Columbia but it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.
The former Clemson signee left the Tigers soon after arriving and decided to sign with South Carolina over Georgia and Tennessee this summer. While he’s now a Gamecock, he’s yet to be cleared by the NCAA to play for the Will Muschamp’s team heading into 2018. According to the South Carolina coach, the team is still waiting to find out what the NCAA decides when it comes to Belk.
During his Thursday media availability, which kicks off the start of fall camp in Columbia, Muschamp was asked about the status of Belk.
“He is a part of our team; he has filed a waiver with the NCAA,” Muschamp said. “I think Josh has a good case… there is no timetable (for the decision from NCAA). ”
His addition could be huge for the Gamecocks, as Belk was rated as a five-star and prospect and the No. 1 defensive tackle prospect in the nation by 247Sports. If cleared to see the field, expect to see the 2018 U.S. Army All-American hit the field early and often for the middle of Muschamp’s defense heading into the fall.
Other updates from Muschamp’s presser, long snapper Ben Asbury has been placed on scholarship and reserve defensive back Javon Charleston remains suspended. Charleston’s suspension is indefinite.
