Will Muschamp’s message to Jake Bentley amidst offensive inconsistency

South Carolina head coach Will Muschamp is adamant about not putting too much pressure on sophomore quarterback Jake Bentley.

“I think he needs to continue to play within our scheme and system and not try and do too much,” Muschamp said, according to a report from TheBigSpur.com. “A lot of young men when you have these situations as far as injuries you feel like you have to do more and outside of what you already do. That’s something we need to make sure he understands.

“He just needs to be Jake.”

The Gamecocks have taken some hits over the past few weeks from an injury standpoint. The most notable loss was top playmaker and leading wide receiver Deebo Samuel, who went down with a broken leg against Kentucky on Sept. 16.

Bentley has been trying to lead an offense that is basically incapable of running the ball. South Carolina ranks 12th in the SEC in rushing yards per game. Bentley, however, ranks second in the SEC with 1,257 passing yards.

“I think he’s been outstanding, completing over 60 percent of his passes, nine touchdowns, averaging over 250 yards per game with a pretty non-existent run game,” Muschamp said.

Muschamp does not want his still young quarterback to put on a superman cape and try and be more than he already is, the report stated.

“It’s a matter of execution. You don’t really think about the people that aren’t out there when you’re on the field. It’s a matter of getting the ball to the right guys and we didn’t do a good enough job of that,” Bentley said after the Gamecocks’ 24-17 loss to Texas A&M on Saturday.
