Is Texas Tech a true title contender? Fans, media react to dominant showing vs. BYU

Texas Tech’s defense thoroughly dominated BYU in the Big 12 Championship game, paving the way for a 34-7 win. The Red Raiders allowed a touchdown on the first drive of the game, but promptly shut BYU down and scored 31 straight points while forcing 4 turnovers. Texas Tech was especially dominant in the second half, outscoring BYU 21-0 across the final 2 quarters.
The question now is this: Given their impressive showing against BYU and prior this season, is it fair to consider Texas Tech a true contender for the national title this season?
On its surface, it seems like a ridiculous question. Of course, the No. 4 team in the country is literally going to contend for a title. But when faced up against opponents such as Georgia, Ohio State and Indiana, will the Red Raiders hold up?
The best team Texas Tech has played this season is BYU. The Red Raiders also boast a strong win against Utah, but their non-conference resume is quite lacking. The SEC and Big Ten have bigger and better lines on either side of the ball than any team Texas Tech has faced this season.
Plenty of folks sure seem to believe the Red Raiders are real. Fans and media reacted to the Red Raiders’ win over BYU on Saturday, and weighed in on the discussion:
