The Kentucky Wildcats and Louisville Cardinals already play each other every year in men’s basketball, making for an exciting game for fans across the state.

However, Western Kentucky coach Rick Stansbury wants in on the party, and his Hilltoppers may be good enough to cause some disruption in the state.

In recent comments to Cincinnati.com, Stansbury pitched his idea for a four-team tournament featuring teams from the state of Kentucky:

“I wish we could come up with some kind of tournament,” he said. “How we could get Kentucky and Louisville, ourself, and another school in a tournament somewhere. It’d be great for everybody. You’d get three of the flagship programs in the country tradition-wise.”

The fourth team could come from Northern Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky or Murray State, or it could rotate every year.

Why stop at four teams, though? Kentucky Sports Radio pitched an idea for an eight-team tournament, which you can read about here.

Would John Calipari and the Wildcats go for an expanded tournament rather than just playing Louisville every year? Calipari has been aggressive with Kentucky’s non-conference scheduling, but it seems the Wildcats would have a lot to lose and very little to gain from creating a tournament with Western Kentucky and others.
