Wrestling legend Jim Ross throws Sooner shade at Texas in move to SEC

Jim Ross has the rare personality where he’s known both as a legendary wrestling announcer, and an Oklahoma Sooners football fan.
So he also has the unique perspective to offer some thoughts on the move to the SEC, as Oklahoma and Texas are set to do in the coming years. Ross shared some of his thoughts on the story during a segment with Greg McElroy and Cole Cubelic on WJOX 94.5 FM in Birmingham, Alabama.
“I think it’s been positive, by and large,” Ross said. “The only people that are against it are old farts like me that perceive any change as a negative. I don’t. That’s not my thing. I think things can always be made better, and I think the SEC is going to be made better with the addition of Oklahoma and Texas.”
Then the rivalry spice came out.
“Which you’ll notice I will say it’s Oklahoma and Texas, course so many guy say Texas and OU, Texas and OU,” Ross said. “What’s the big deal about Texas, they haven’t won a conference title since Conrad was 215. It’s just a funny deal, I don’t get it. We’re, I think, overall excited.”
Ross then admitted it’s not all positive.
“I think the biggest negative that came from it was, or has been, the schedule in general,” Ross said. “I look at it kind of like a wrestling situation. Wrestling fans like to boo, they like to boo the villains, they like to pay money to see somebody get beat up. All those kind of things, that’s kind of where we are with this deal. Oklahoma’s going to have a bunch of new opponents. They’re going to have new rivals, and I sure as hell would like to tailgate at The Grove than in Manhattan, Kansas, at Kansas State.”
