The XFL was one of the last professional leagues to make its decision on the remainder of the 2020 season. With 5 games left of the 10-game inaugural season, the league announced that play as been suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The league released an official statement Thursday explaining that players will be compensated their base pay and benefits for the remainder of the season. Ticket holders will also be issued refunds and credit toward future games.

“Currently, the XFL will not be playing its regular-season games,” the XFL’s statement read. “However, all players will be paid their base pay and benefits for the 2020 regular season. All XFL ticket holders will be issued refunds or credit toward future games. The XFL is committed to playing a full season in 2021 and future years.”

This unfortunately marks the second straight year that a start-up professional football league didn’t play the entire season. Last year, the Alliance of American Football (AAF) ceased operations after 8 weeks of games. The AAF declared bankruptcy; however, the XFL intends on returning in 2021.
