Anthony Richardson appears to have avoided a major injury after being knocked out of Thursday night’s preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens.

An unblocked defender came flying off the edge on a second-down play in the first quarter of the Indianapolis Colts’ preseason opener. Richardson, who was looking in the opposite direction, was crunched by Baltimore’s David Ojabo and injured his hand in the process. The Colts quickly ruled him out for the remainder of the game. Colts head coach Shane Steichen said after the game that Richardson had dislocated his right pinkie and was considered day-to-day going forward.

Friday morning, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that X-rays came back clean and Richardson is expected back on the practice field for the Colts in “the coming days.”

Richardson completed 2 of his first 3 passes for 21 yards before exiting the game. The former Florida quarterback was replaced by Daniel Jones.

Jones completed 10 of his 21 passes for 144 yards in the 24-16 loss to the Ravens. Steichen said the plan was for Richardson to play the bulk of the first half and split the 2 quarterbacks’ time equally in next week’s game against the Green Bay Packers.

With Richardson’s time on the field being so brief, he might play more against the Packers if he’s available.

“That’s definitely the thing I’m going to look into because, obviously, Daniel got the bulk of the reps tonight,” Steichen said.

Richardson told reporters after the game he was mostly fine and was just dealing with swelling. Steichen said the Colts’ training staff popped the dislocated finger back into place.

The Colts will host Green Bay on Saturday, Aug. 16 and then conclude the preseason a week later on the road against Cincinnati. The regular season begins at home against the Miami Dolphins on Sept. 7.
