With Deshaun Watson expected to be suspended and Baker Mayfield traded, the Cleveland Browns are looking at available quarterbacks. A pair of SEC alumni have made headlines in the Browns’ search.

Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot reported Thursday that the Browns are working out A.J. McCarron and Josh Rosen as potential backups to Jacoby Brissett.

McCarron has been in the NFL since 2014 after 4 seasons at Alabama. He has played in 18 NFL games, making 5 starts. McCarron signed with the Atlanta Falcons last year, but tore his ACL in preseason play and spent the regular season on injured reserve.

McCarron was on the Houston Texans’ roster in the 2019 and ’20 seasons. His last regular-season appearance came with the Texans in 2020. McCarron’s most recent start was in 2019.

Midway through Cabot’s article, another former SEC standout quarterback is mentioned:

The Browns are not expected to be interested in Cam Newton…

After losing the starting job in New England to Mac Jones last year, Newton returned to Carolina, where he played from 2011-19. Newton played in 8 games for the Panthers in 2021, making 5 starts. The former No. 1 overall pick (2011) and MVP (2015) is currently a free agent.
