Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson has drawn plenty of attention from scouts and gurus as the 2026 NFL Draft approaches.

Simpson guided Alabama to the quarterfinals of the College Football Playoff in his lone full year as a starter last season. Now, he’s being tabbed as a potential first-round pick. However, ESPN’s Jordan Reid isn’t as high on Simpson.

During a recent appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Reid addressed the chatter that the New York Jets could select Simpson with the No. 16 pick. Simpson had a private workout with the Jets after the Alabama Pro Day. Yet, Reid cited Simpson’s minimal starting experience as a deterrent for being first-round worthy.

“I just don’t see Ty Simpson being that first round quarterback. I feel more comfortable taking him in the second round but of course the quality of this year’s quarterback class is not great as you guys know,” Reid said. “Teams salivate over these quarterbacks. The Jets at 16, I just think it’s a huge risk.”

The 6-foot-2, 208-pound Simpson passed for 3,567 yards with 28 touchdowns, five interceptions, and a 145.2 passer rating last season en route to Alabama finishing with an 11-4 record.

Alabama’s last five quarterbacks have all been selected in the top 92 picks. Simpson looks to join Bryce Young (No. 1 in 2023), Tua Tagovailoa (No. 5 in 2020) and Mac Jones (No. 15 in 2021) from that group as another first-round selection.
