Former Texas A&M star linebacker Nic Scourton suffered a collapsed lung in a recent practice and will miss time with the Carolina Panthers, according to head coach Dave Canales.

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported on Saturday afternoon that Scourton suffered the injury during Thursday’s joint practice with the Houston Texans. Canales said the injury to the rookie pass rusher is more serious than the Panthers thought when it happened, and that Scourton would miss time this preseason while he recovers. Canales framed it as a week-to-week injury when discussing when Scourton would return to practice this preseason.

The Panthers were practicing with the Texans this week in the leadup to Saturday’s preseason game in Houston. When Scourton, a first-team All-SEC selection in his lone season last year in College Station, left Thursday’s practice with the Texans, heat-related symptoms were given as the reason.

While Scourton, who spent 2 years at Purdue before transferring to Texas A&M, did display symptoms related to the extreme heat, it was actually a collapsed lung that was the issue. Canales said after Saturday’s 20-3 loss to the Texans that Scourton was taken to the hospital after leaving Thursday’s practice and was diagnosed with the collapsed lung.

Scourton, who was a 2nd-round pick in this year’s draft by Carolina (51st overall), returned to Carolina in a car because the team didn’t want to risk further complications by Scourton flying back.
